Casey Coleman, the chief information officer of the General Services Administration, spoke at a Federal Open Source Alliance Web seminar held earlier today.
Coleman noted that the GSA does indeed use a wide variety of open source programs. The agency started using open source for information systems, though is increasingly using the software for transactional mission-critical systems. For instance, the agency is using the JBoss application server for many of its acquisitions systems, and Linux for its data centers.
(In addition to those workhorses, Coleman also mentioned that GSA is using a number of other programs, some of which surprised us: Bugzilla, for bug tracking, JUnit testing software, the JMeter Apache performance monitoring tool, and Eclipse, which can be used for application development and as a run-time engine.)
Tired of the status quo in middleware? Facing project backlogs? Trying to do more, with already-constrained resources and budget?
With IT project backlogs growing and an increased demand for modular, integrated, rich end-user experiences, the use of open source software provides a more efficient and economical way to solve these infrastructure software challenges.
Join us and hear from Rob Cardwell, Vice President of JBoss Enterprise Middleware, Red Hat how government agencies can accelerate SOA and application deployment in a simple, open and affordable way with JBoss Enterprise Middleware. It's a complete portfolio of mission-critical open source middleware including an ESB-based SOA platform, portal platform and data services platform that enables you to confidently develop, integrate, deploy and manage mission critical Web 2.0 applications, enterprise data, and SOA services.
