FROM THE INSIDE

A note from Paul Smith.

As Thanksgiving Day passes, we are reminded of the need to give thanks to those people in our lives who contribute to the well being and prosperity we find each year. Red Hat would like to thank our customers and partners for helping make Red Hat's third annual Government Users and Developers Conference a record breaker this year. At the event, Red Hat also announced that we are pursuing Common Criteria certification for the JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, reinforcing our commitment to information technology (IT) security for public-sector customers.

In addition, the findings of a new study conducted by the Federal Open Source Alliance (http://www.federalopensourcealliance.com) called "The Federal Open Source Referendum Study" provided new insight into the current adoption rates, trends, benefits, challenges, and success rates of open source implementation within Federal agencies. This month's newsletter is full of updates and resources for you to get a better perspective these initiatives and more.

Feel like giving? Give one, get one. See our article below about the the mission of the One Laptop per Child (OLPC). Since November 12, OLPC has been offering a limited-time Give One Get One program in the United States and Canada. During Give One Get One, you can donate the revolutionary XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, and also receive one for the child in your life in recognition of your contribution. Tis the season for giving!

Respectfully,
Paul Smith, VP of Government Sales Operations

BREAKFAST CONFERENCE:

Mark your calendar for Red Hat and AltaTek's December 13 breakfast seminar.

Join Red Hat and AltaTek to discuss the open source roadmap for new and exciting developments and upcoming product releases around Realtime Linux and innovative security solutions.

In military deployments, "close enough" isn't "good enough." Historically, standard Linux kernel offerings were unable to provide the consistent low-latency predictability required for time-sensitive deployments. This is about to change in a big way, as Red Hat has spearheaded the mainstream implementation of realtime capabilities in the form of a soon-to-be-released product offering. The first deployed application has been established in the DDG-1000 Navy destroyer program.

Meet with Tim Burke, Senior Director of the Red Hat Realtime product team, who will discuss:

  • The new deterministic kernel and Java virtual machine.
  • A high-speed messaging middleware offering.
  • How Red Hat brings consistent, predictable performance to your SOA stack.
DATE: December 13, 2007
TIME: 8 a.m.-11 a.m.

SURVEY RESULTS:

Open source gaining traction in U.S. Government.

More than half of U.S. government agencies have turned to open-source software.

November 02, 2007 (IDG News Service) -- More than half of all U.S. government executives have rolled out open-source software at their agencies, and 71% believe their agency can benefit from the software, according to a survey released Thursday.

Fifty-five percent of respondents said their agencies have been involved or are currently involved in an open-source implementation, according to the survey, commissioned by the Federal Open Source Alliance, a group pushing the use of open-source software in government. The alliance is made up of Intel, Hewlett-Packard, and Red Hat.

ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD:

One learning child. One connected child. One laptop at a time.

The mission of One Laptop per Child (OLPC) is to empower the children of developing countries to learn by providing one connected laptop to every school-age child. In order to accomplish our goal, we need people who believe in what we're doing and want to help make education for the world's children a priority, not a privilege. Thanks to a growing interest in the program, we are extending Give One Get One until the end of the year. You also may donate laptops via our Simply Give and Give Many options. Through the increasing public interest in OLPC, we hope to give many more children the opportunity to grow, explore, learn, and express themselves.

IN THE PRESS:

HP backs Red Hat in government biz bid.

When it comes to big enterprise IT deployments in the U.S., there is no enterprise bigger than the federal government itself. Linux vendor Red Hat is hoping for a larger portion of the government's multi-billion dollar IT spending with its widest-ever array of security certifications, thanks to assistance from HP.

HP recently released new Multi-Level Security (MLS) Services for Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® 5 in support of the open source OS vendor's government push.

JBoss to get Common Criteria certification.

The JBoss Enterprise Application Platform has embarked on Common Criteria certification, Red Hat announced yesterday. Red Hat oversees the development of his open-source application server software.

The company also announced that its MetaMatrix Data Services Platform will undergo certification. MetaMatrix provides data management capabilities for ice-oriented architectures.

JBoss will be going under Evaluation Assurance Level 2, a company spokesperson said. The lab that will do the work has not been chosen yet.

Common Criteria is an internationally standardized framework for characterizing how secure a given software product is under normal operating conditions.

EVENT RECAP

Highlights from the third annual Red Hat Government Users and Developers Conference.

On November 1 we held the third annual Red Hat Government Users and Developers Conference at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC, where we d almost 300 customers, speakers, and partners. In addition to our record attendance, the conference was a success thanks to a great roster of speakers, formation breakout sessions, and helpful hands-on labs that were overflowing with participants.

Conference attendees shared tips and best practices for open source deployment and openly discussed government IT challenges with their peers. From Computing with SELinux to open source in health IT, there were a variety of sessions to choose from and plenty of options for learning and collaboration.

In addition to the educational sessions, Red Hat formally announced at the conference its intention to pursue Common Criteria certification for JBoss and etaMatrix solutions. Also announced were results from The Federal Open Source Alliance, of which Red Hat is a founding member, which released its Federal pen Source Referendum, a report designed to identify current open source adoption rates and trends in the federal government. The survey showed that more han 71 percent of respondents believe their agency could benefit from open source solutions and that more than half of respondents state they are likely consider open source to consolidate data centers.
